Vegan MoFo #11: Iron Chef II: Attack of the Grains

Last week, I picked a personal favorite of mine.  This week, I decided to go in the opposite direction and pick an ingredient that I really don’t like that much.  Maybe I just haven’t met the right recipe, though!  There are quite a few things that I didn’t like at first (like collard greens and kale) until I found the right recipe for them.  I will shut up now and present you with the ingredient.

Yes, that’s right, I don’t really like quinoa.  I think it has a funny taste.  I am a horrible vegan and the vegan police are on their way right now to take away my special vegan powers.  I’m going to have to think on this one pretty hard to figure out a dish that i’m 99% sure i’ll like!

ETA:  Oops, I forgot to add the rules for those who don’t know!  Make an original recipe, not just something out of a cookbook (inspired by is fine).  Entries are due at 2 pm CST on Sunday, just leave the link to your blog entry here!

  • I challenge you to try this recipe for garlic saffron quinoa and not like it! http://cookingforaveganlover.com/2010/04/11/a-yummy-day-of-eating/

I felt exactly the same way about quinoa, I wanted to like to soo bad, but just didn’t…until my friends made it for me.. They very simply just boiled it and we ate it as rice and i loved it..

  • Huge quinoa fan here. I’m excited about the challenge!

  • I am not a quinoa fan either, so far I like it the best when it is cooked in broth or juice. Or baked into things.

  • I say grind it up and bake it into cupcakes or a tea cake!

  • SallyT

Try the red quinoa. I like the taste much better than the white.

Oh, and rinse it bfr you cook it. It helps. I just put it in a strainer and run water over it for a while.

  • Clea

I agree with SallyT (there is usually some sort of “coating” on quinoa that you need to rinse off) and if you have time, also toast the grains in a pot or pan with a little olive oil before you cook them. Takes a few extra minutes but is well worth it!

  • if you have 500 vegan recipes; make MexiQuinoa. It really hides the “earthy” flavor of quinoa.

  • We are not sitting outside your door with hand cuffs. lol! Like Clea said Quinoa should be rinsed first before you cook with it.

You can sub Quinoa instead of rice. I like to use it in my mexican rice but there are so many other ways to use it in too. I hope you try it again.

  • my favorite quinoa recipe is the green-wa in Yellow Rose Recipe. A-MA-ZING! with spinach and coriander and coconut milk… Arch! I want some of it RIGHT NOW!

  • Mo

Oh, damn, I have to think on this one!

  • i hate quinoa too. 🙂
(it coats my teeth and makes them feel porous like soda and spinach do to them. icky.)

  • Oh no get those vegan quinoa haters! i am very fond of quinoa and it’s protein content. My fave way of making it is quinoa tabouleh. dig the food porn too!

  • We are on our way, but we don’t want your vegan badge, we want your tempeh wingzzzzz!!!!!

  • I actually “scour” my quinoa. Like, vigorously agitate it. And it usually gets kinda sudsy.

The red quinoa is much tastier, but usually cost a lot more, and it can be really hard to find. The black is really pretty, but it’s really crunchy, and extremely hard to find.

I really want to make a dessert, but I don’t know if I’ll have time….
