Vegan MoFo #18: Hometown pride…

…is not something that I have a lot of.  I mean, we have a lot of tourist attractions for Abraham Lincoln and John Wayne Gacy lived here for awhile, and that’s about it.  Oh, and we have Horseshoes.  Al Roker even came here for a Food Network show just to talk about horseshoes!

That’s great.  What the fuck is a horseshoe?

A horseshoe is an open faced sandwich.  From the bottom up it is:  Toasted bread, meat (but some people make vegetable or egg horseshoes), french fries, and the whole thing is drowned in cheese sauce.  The best thing is that since they’re so simple, they’re easily made vegan with seitan/tempeh/tofu and a vegan cheese sauce.  Also, since I can’t get a vegan version at a restaurant, I can control the fat content so something that seems to be completely unhealthy and greasy can be made not-so-bad for me by baking my fries, using less fat in the sauce, a smaller portion overall, etc.

And now i’ve made myself hungry.
